A real-world test of simple solutions for more power

AJ was kind enough to drive down (not trailer) his Charger, click off some 10-second passes and then spend the rest of the day helping us out. The car has an Arrington Performance 440 engine, pro-torque converter, Paramount Performance NAG1 tranny and 8.8 rear with DSS custom axles. Todd made a few runs with the stock setup. The 5.7 has served him well for a few years and it was performing as expected today. The weather was good: low humidity, high pressure and not a cloud in the sky. Sounds like a good day for drag racing! With a 2.109 60-foot time, Todd would be up and running the quarter mile in 14.27 at 97.6 mph. This was around 10:00 a.m. and the best air of the day.DAVE VERNA
After the stock air cleaner was discarded the Arrington setup was installed. The entire process took about 10 minutes at the track and we were ready for even more fun.DAVE VERNA
AJ was able to plug in a Diablosport Predator tuner and throw a couple of different tunes at the car. The out-of-the-box tunes are based on the octane rating you plan on running and the 91 was the next step. There are two tunes we tried: 91 and 93 octane. The performance gains from a custom tune would be more beneficial but we’d need to strap this sucker to a dyno and laptop to take full advantage of AJ’s abilities. The Diablo tuner added another 10 to 15 hp with speeds solidly approaching the 100 mph range by being able to add spark and fuel that takes advantage of the cooler and swirled charge the intake provided. We corrected all the slips to even the playing field for the day’s changing weather conditions. After we finished testing to back up our morning baselines, we removed the Diablo tuning and went back to the intake alone, and gave back over one mph, confirming our real world 10 to 15 hp estimate.DAVE VERNA
And we’re off! Todd ripped off the same 2.10 60-foot time and wound the 5.7 out to a tune of 14.18 at 98.68 mph. The air filter change was worth almost a tenth and a click over a mph versus the stock air filter setup.DAVE VERNA
Todd Kravitz has a stock 2007 Dodge Charger he uses as his daily transportation. The 5.7 Hemi was mechanically untouched before today and we decided to take him to the track and make a few changes with the help from ShopHemi.com.
AJ Berge made the trip to the track with us to do a few basic changes.
The basis of dragging these guys to the track in the first place was to see if the bolt-on basics actually do anything in the real world.
We figure the first things that get installed to a modern Hemi are the air filter and a tune, so we contacted AJ and arranged the day. AJ brought an Arrington carbon fiber cold air intake (complete with air filter) and his plug-in tuner, a Diablosport Predator, for the car. With such a small change, would we really see any benefits on the track today? Keep reading to find out!
