1 We wanted to know exactly how fast our new 392 would be spinning, so adding a tachometer is the only way to be certain. Good gauges are worth their weight in gold in keeping a new engine safe!
2 The Super Tach was a classic design back in the day; the new replacement Sun offers is perfect to maintain the old school look. Several bracket options are included in the kit.
3 We TIG-welded a bracket for the tachometer so not to drill into the dash pad. It angled the tach so we can see it.
4 Installing the tachometer was the easiest work we’ve done on the car to date. Simply follow the wiring diagram and set up the tach for the engine you’ll be using, and you’ll be watching the needle bounce to the tune of your favorite engine in no time.
In the beginning of the Swing ’n Sting Dart project, a lot of ideas started progressing towards a new dash cluster, but all that was put aside when the new motor idea came up.
We still needed to see what our “Mancini Stroker Monster” was doing, and the perfect answer for us came from legendary Sunpro Gauges, who re-released the old Super Tach from the 1970s.
It measures 3 3/8-inches in diameter and mounts into a chrome housing; it also has a 250-degree sweeping face that ranges from 0 to 8,000 rpm, with a red pointer to set up your shift point. It features 360-degree backlighting as well, and the blue line styling is a great compliment to our old-school body. The tach can be connected to one- to 10-cylinder engines.
When you buy the Super Tach, it’ll come with two mounting brackets: one is for the steering column, and the other is a dash mount. The chrome metal cup that adds that perfect amount of nostalgia and modern look to the piece is removable should you put it in the dash itself. Since it’s electronic and not manual, wiring it up was simply a matter of viewing the directions, splicing the wires together and tying it into our MSD ignition coil, in-dash fuse box, and ground; the fourth wire is for the light; we fed that into the dash-lighting circuit of the headlight switch.
I can tell from watching it, this is one of the best things I could have added to the package and it greatly helps in knowing exactly where the revs are in our hot little 392.
