Designed to drive circles around the competition on the large ovals within the NASCAR circuit, the Superbird was still subject to several laws ranging from physics, homologation, and the street.

Mecum is spooling up for their huge Houston auction, scheduled to begin on April 10th and this fabulous 1970 Plymouth Superbird is scheduled as part of the show.

Designed to drive circles around the competition on the large ovals within the NASCAR circuit, the Superbird was still subject to several laws ranging from physics, homologation, and the street. To make the aerodynamically-significant body legal for racing, MOPAR needed to produce the required 500 street-going versions for public consumption to meet homologation edicts.

This particular 'bird was sufficiently-equipped to handle any competitor on the open highways of America, thanks to its Super Commando 440 engine (featuring a 4-bbl carburetor) and that oh-so-cool pistol-gripped 4-speed. Other performance touches that are sure to grab onto the heart, and purse-strings of enthusiasts are the 3.55 Sure Grip differential, bucket seats and Tic-Toc tach.

Wearing period-correct Rallye wheels shod with Polyglas tires and wrapped up in B5 Blue, the car is sure to make the show interesting, even though the speed it travels on its trip over the auction block as Lot 110, is but a decimel point of its full potential. Be sure to check out the highlights of the show. This Lot scheduled to be sold Saturday at 1:45PM.
