It was an all-Mopar final on Sunday when the 30th annual Carquest Auto Parts NHRA Nationals reached the showdown for Pro Stock at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Phoenix, Arizona. At the end of the run, Allen Johnson picked up his 21st Wally in his Team Mopar Avenger.
Despite his final round loss in the Kendall Oil Avenger, V. Gaines took over the points lead in the division for the first time in his career. Gaines had competed in his 400th race in the Round One eliminations.
Johnson’s road to victory was marred by a slight problem during round four qualifying when the car was shut down during the run. The crew addressed the issue and the car was back running times in the 6.55 range to hold down a solid starting point. Johnson ran down his first two opponents, Jimmy Alund and Pomona winner Jason Line, to move on to new pairings. He faced Dave Connolly, who has had his number throughout their matchups as Connolly has won 15 of the previous 19 races. Johnson’s fifth win against this opponent set up the showdown with Gaines. Johnson picked up the win when Gaines’ car experienced a shake and the veteran shut it down.
Johnson joins Gaines in the top five in the point standings, sitting in third after two events. The teams will move on to the Amalie Oil Gatornationals in Gainesville, Florida on March 13-16.
