The cover of the May 2014 issue of Smoke Signals magazine reminded many GMC truck owners that the Pontiac Oakland Club International ( has a GMC Truck chapter to help them learn more about the history, restoration and preservation of their trucks. Of great interest to GMC enthusiasts is Smoke Signals’ large classified ads section, where parts are listed.
Smoke Signals actually began as a monthly newsletter full of parts ads back when the club was strictly for Pontiac and Oakland automobile owners. A separate quarterly magazine called Silver Streak News was also delivered to members then. Eventually, the two publications were merged into Smoke Signals magazine and GMC trucks were brought into the club a few years ago.
With vintage trucks being a hot segment in the classic vehicle hobbies today, using the Placid Blue 1958 GMC Fleetside Pickup on the current magazine’s provides a reminder that owners of any GMC truck or coach can join POCI to get help with their hobby interests. The restored truck belongs to Ken Davis of Texas. It has its original 347 Pontiac V-8, dual-range Hydra-Matic Drive, power steering and white sidewall tires.
In the article written by Steven and Rebekah Schronk, Davis says that he had to wait a half-century to get his dream machine. “There had been several that came along over the years,” he said. “But between building a house, paying for a farm and raising a family, there wasn’t any spare money for an extra pickup.” Davis finally got the opportunity to purchase the restored GMC after its owner passed away. However, it took him a year to seal the deal.
