For die-hard racing fans, the all-out 1969 NASCAR season remains unforgettable with the Chrysler and FoMoCo “Aero Warriors” battling at 200 miles per hour before unprecedented numbers of fans at the track and watching on TV. A special Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS 396 Convertible served as the official pace car at Daytona during the 1969 season-opening Daytona 500’ and that July’s “Firecracker 400,” with both races dramatically won by the hard-charging LeeRoy Yarbrough driving for NASCAR legend Junior Johnson. That pace car is being offered  at the Russo and Steele Scottsdale ’14 Auction, January 15-19 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Originally titled to NASCAR co-founder William C. “Bill” France Sr., this Camaro RS/SS 396 Convertible was acquired by the consignor during the mid-1980s. It served as a parade car in Atlanta and its early history was researched and confirmed. A high-quality restoration returned the car to its distinctive 1969 NASCAR livery. Powered by a 350hp, 396 big-block engine mated to a Turbo-Hydramatic 400  automatic, the Camaro is highly equipped with such desirable features and options as air conditioning, a power top, power windows, and a stainless-steel chambered exhaust system. The iconic Rally Sport appearance package adds even more appeal.
Highly attractive, the Camaro is accompanied by a copy of the original title to NASCAR signed by William C. France and photographs obtained from the Daytona archives, showing the car with its original license plate matching the car’s original title. Attractive, highly optioned and painstakingly verified, this outstanding 1969 Camaro RS/SS 396 Convertible is a fascinating piece of American high-performance and motorsports history, marking an excellent collector car choice and a perfect cornerstone for any collection.
This car is one of many quality automobiles featured at Russo and Steele’s Scottsdale, Arizona auction. Set for January 15th to the 19th, the event will continue to deliver an amazing selection of exceptional automobiles, gala lifestyle events, and of course, our signature high-octane auction experience.
