If it was easy to find classic cars, everyone would be doing it. If you truly want to stand out from the crowd, you have to dare to be different and take risks along the way. It will be running through the new Discovery Channel program, Chrome Underground, which airs at 10 p.m. Eastern on Friday, May 23.
Yusuf Johnson and Antonio Brunet put their lives, their reputations and sometimes substantial amounts of cash on the line in their search for rare, vintage cars. They work in places no other car collectors would dream about stepping foot – traveling inside lawless countries.
Why do they do it? At one time, Yusuf and Antonio’s Austin, Texas-based company Motoreum (www.motoreum.com) sourced their one-of-a-kind cars inside the U.S. Today, valuable cars are extremely difficult to find in the U.S. Competition is fierce in the multi-billion dollar industry, so the team had to use their wits, which meant opening new opportunities where others fear to tread.
“We’re a little crazy, but we’re adrenaline addicts,” said Antonio, summing up their desires. While some display the need for speed, these guys display the need to get that perfect car for waiting customers.
The first episode of the show brings a new character, Andrew, who plays a pivotal role from the start. Throughout the episodes, danger lurks on every corner, but the types of cars found bring just what they’re looking for, thanks to the work of scouts.
“We’ve developed a scouting network over the years and we’ve been working with them on past finds. Car collectors tend to keep a low-profile and don’t display their wares. We have to have these scouts do the advance work for us to get the cars.”
The list of cars needed varies with the market. The team is looking for cars that can bring a tidy profit on a quick turnaround. For now, a good example would be vintage European Sports Cars, which will be included into the finds of the first episode.
While it’s pretty serious, getting the cars that set the business ahead of the next in the ultra-competitive world is also fun for the two and thrilling with the finds. They have invited us along for the ride from the safety of our homes. Chrome Underground debuts at 10 p.m. Eastern Friday, May 23.
