Family Fun at AACA Museum
Drive-in nights for June and July
Larry Jewett - June 14, 2012 11:29 AM
Drive-in movies were first introduced in New Jersey in the 1930s as a way to make the moviegoing experience more comfortable for guests by allowing visitors to watch movies from the comfort of their own car. Drive-ins reached the peak of popularity in the 1950s and 1960s. At that time, there were over 4,000 drive-ins in the United States.
Back by popular demand, the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) Museum will be hosting two drive-in movie weekends, allowing guests to experience the nostalgia brought on by this iconic characteristic of the time. The three-story inflatable movie screen, along with a sound system, will be erected on the grounds directly behind the museum. Visitors are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs for viewing with drive-in parking spots available on a first come, first served basis.
On June 15 & 16 (rain/wind date June 17), the Museum will be showing Disney PIXAR Cars (rated G, running time 117 minutes). On July 20 & 21 (rain/wind date July 22), the Museum will be showing Disney PIXAR Cars 2 (rated G, running time 106 minutes).
The suggested donation is $15 per car. Prior to each main attraction, the screen will be filled with classic cartoons reminiscent of the early drive-in days. Viewing time will be approximately 8:45 – 9:00 p.m. as darkness permits. Showfield parking and blanket area will be open at 7 p.m.
Food vendors will be on-site with drive-in favorites. For the comfort and consideration of all visitors, pets will not be permitted.
The first weekend is a special weekend as the AACA Museum will open their “100 Years of Chevrolet” exhibit on June 15. This display will feature more than 30 fabulous cars telling the Chevrolet story. The display and drive-in make the perfect Father’s Day gift for the car guy in your life.
