The excitement of the season opener was obvious as the NMRA gathered at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Bradenton, Florida. A good turnout of cars combined with nice weather and an assault on class record books became the objective for the Sunday final eliminations.
Fox Mustangs continued to hold a strong presence within the field as these cars are perfect for the task of getting the speed to the ground and getting the car down the track. The Cobras were prepared to strike throughout the day as well and the results started to show it.
John Urist of Albuquerque, New Mexico, put the fastest time of the weekend on the board when he powered to a 202.38 speed in the ATF Street Outlaw finals. Urist had trimmed a 7.032 e.t. in his opening round run, backed up by the 7.104 in his class-winning run.
Fellow Albuquerque racer Frank Varela swept the Diablosport Coyote Modified class with low e.t., top speed and the championship. Varela hustled to his championship win after earlier recording an 8.706 e.t. and a 157.28 top speed.
Pennsylvania racers were well represented as Waynesboro’s Shane Stymeist clipped off the Strange Coyote Stock event in his ’90 Mustang, picking up low e.t. honors with a 10.438. Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania’s Brian Mitchell set a new class record in Edelbrock Renegade with a run of 8.211 in his ’04 Cobra. Keystone racer Wesley Dalryple posted victory in Flex-A-Lite Open Comp by shotting a perfect light in his ’83 Mustang.
Florida had a pair of drivers in viuctory with Jason Henson of Eustis winning the Exedy Modular Muscle in his ’03 Mach 1. The Spring Break Shoot-Out trophy will be staying in the Sudshine State, thanks to Randy Seward’s winning 8.348 pass, which was the lowest in the competition. The Orlando resident drives a ’91 Mustang
Other winners included Matthew Williams (Long Brach, New Jersey) in Nitto Factory Stock, Teddy Weaver (Stafford, VA) in ACT Pure Street and Chad Wendel (Portland, IN) in Roush Super Stang.
The next NMRA event will be held April 10 -13 at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Georgia.
