Ford may have been kept out of victory lane in the Funny Car portion of the 30th annual Carquest Auto Parts NHRA Nationals, but the rest of the teams will have to do better if they want a shot at winning the points title.
With two events in the books, a pair of Mustangs sit in the top two spots on the strength of an opening race win and a runner-up finish in the most recent event.
Robert Hight moved into second in the overall standings on the strength of his runner-up finish at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Phoenix, Arizona. Hight had entered the competition as third fastest qualifier and charged through the ranks to earn the Sunday match-up against eventual champion Alexis DeJoria. DeJoria had earned her trip to the finals by knocking off point leader and fast qualifier John Force. The loss ended Force’s streak of six consecutive finals, dating back to last season.
Despite the loss in the Semis, Force holds on to the points lead in the division with Hight moving into second spot. The Ford teams will head to Gainesville, Florida, for the Amalie Oil Gatornationals with sight set on strengthening the points positions with wins. Hight was eliminated in semi-finals last year while Force bowed out in round one at the hands of daughter Courtney.
