Located on the Mississippi River, the Quad Cities is comprised of Davenport and Bettendorf, Iowa; Rock Island and Moline/East Moline, Illinois; and surrounding communities. The region’s easy access to river and rail transportation made it a good location for manufacturers.
Automobile fever is still catching in the Quad Cities. During the last two weeks of June 2013, car enthusiasts can attend five major car shows that include the: Hemmings Motor News Great Race, Antique Automobile Club of American Grand National, Lincoln Zephyr Central Chapter Meet, Greater Rockford Early Ford V8 Club, a local Car Show and Shine, and Dwyer & Michaels Classic Car Show.
Davenport, Iowa, will host an overnight stop on the 2013 Great Race presented by Hagerty on Sunday, June 23. The Great Race, the world’s premiere old car rally, is expected to bring up to 100 antique automobiles built prior to 1969 to the Mississippi Riverfront in LeClaire Park in downtown Davenport. The cars arrive in around 5:00 p.m. at one-minute intervals for more than an hour and a half and stay parked until 7:30 p.m. to allow spectators to visit with the participants and to look at the cars. Free Admission.
Arrive early that weekend for the 3rd annual Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS)-sanctioned event, BBQ & Craft Brew, on June 22-23 in LeClaire Park. It brings teams from coast to coast to compete for the best BBQ. On Sunday, KCBS judging starts at 2:30 p.m. with the champion being announced around 4 p.m. There is a Local Car Show & Shine on Sunday afternoon in the Freight House parking lot (adjacent to LeClaire Park).
From brass to (fiber) glass, and the Roaring 20’s to the mega power of the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s all will be on display for the public at the Antique Automobile Club of America Grand National on Saturday, June 29. Open free to the public, cars will be on display from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day on the John Deere Commons, in downtown Moline, Illinois. In just one display, you will be able to see how vehicles have evolved through the years. Each vehicle is required to drive on and off of the show field and a highlight of the meet is to listen to the distinct sounds each vehicle makes as it motors into and out of the exhibit area. Each entry must have won a national prize at regional events to qualify for this meet, which is held only once per year nationwide.
The Dwyer & Michaels Classic Car Show with over 100 cars is Saturday, June 15, in Centennial Park in Davenport, Iowa. This car show is part of the Rally on the River Motorcycle Rally on June 12-15.
The Lincoln Zephyr Owners Club hosts their Central Chapter Meet in the Quad Cities on June 19-23. The public is welcome to visit their concours and judging from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Friday in the Isle Casino Hotel in Bettendorf, Iowa. (Public asked not to crowd cars or interfere with judging.) 30 members of the Greater Rockford Early Ford V8 Club are meeting in the Quad Cities to be in town for The Great Race.
These car events combined are bringing a positive economic impact of over $600,000 to the local economy. For more information, see
