Word on the street that a new gen GTO blew their rear end at the start line.
With cars staged day 1, we received our first 4 checkpoints. Finding out what the 4 checkpoints are, and driving simultaneously. I'm rolling with team NWLB 762 today, driver Davis Schunke and co-driver Mike Schunke. The three of us dissect the checkpoints as we start heading due west.
First checkpoint in, we realize we've chosen a poor congested road. We lose time. Rt 50 traffic laden with coal trucks and geriatric people out for a Monday drive.
Second checkpoint is on Saddle Point, WV lookout point. Checkpoint 3 is USS West Virginia flag mast at the courthouse in Clarksburg, WV. Then, we were off to the Trans-Allegheny lunatic asylum. Again, a poor choice of roads and heavy traffic lead to our demise for the day.
After checkpoint 4, we received our checkpoint card for the final 5 and 6 checkpoint. We knew some of the leading 3 teams were 45 minutes ahead of us. We called it for the day at that point, knowing we wouldn't make first 10 in the field.
We opted for twisty windys on Route 74 and then ripped along to the finish line at Keiser’s BBQ joint in Athens, Ohio.
Post rally shenanigans. Champagne was flowing in celebration of our buddies’ second place finish for the day. “Carwash” and his co driver DK were rolling in their 911 turbo and swooped second place, falling 91 seconds shy of first place, taken by Team Angry Goat, driven by Terry Barnett and son Riley. Après party moved to the hotel, where we enjoyed "water and juice" until midnight.
Day 2 start is here in Athens, Ohio. We’re staged for line up to head to Mitchellville, Indiana.
