Atomic Orange Does It Every Time

Al Loeffler of Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, the owner of this sweet 2007 ’Vette, summed it up succinctly on his tech sheet. “I really wanted something that would pop when you saw it.”

Mission accomplished. An Atomic Orange Metallic Tintcoat convertible is a tough act to beat. The color would look good on anything, but on a Corvette, it looks great.

When Al made the likely difficult decision to part with his 1967 roadster, getting a brand new car was the only course to take. The move led to a string of visits to Corvette dealers that became a weekend staple. “We must have looked at over 200 cars,” Al said. “I never saw this exact car. We knew the interior color, top color, body, wheels and options we wanted, so we put them all together and ordered it.”

In a nutshell, it had to be a convertible. The exterior paint color was a premium option, which put an additional $750 on the ticket. There’s the Z51 Performance Package, which became another must. The car has the six-speed manual transmission. The cashmere interior complements the tan top perfectly.

You may see a few nuances to this car that set it off from the limited number that may have been close. Al noted the center hubs on the wheels actually came as gray on gray flags. That has been altered to put a little color into the flags. Al chose to add some mud flaps in the wheel wells. The interior wasn’t without change as the console armrest was given the heave-ho. In its place, Al replaced it with a color-matched padded armrest. Before the ’67 went to its new owner, Al took off his stainless steel license plate frames. They look just fine on this 2007.

There’s a Callaway connection with this beast, thanks to the Callaway supercharger that pumps up the power to 560 with torque ringing up in the 530 range. It’ll scoot down the quarter mile in 11.2 seconds at 124 mph, thanks to the power boost. Other Callaway touches include exhaust, injector covers, sill plates, floor mats and emblems. “There is only one Callaway convertible made with my options,” Al states.

The car can hold its own on the dragstrip or the show field. It was built to be everything a car person could ask for. It does that with ease.

Al knows a thing or two about award winners. That ’67 roadster was a celebrity pick at the Carlisle show in 2005 and had been featured in Corvette magazines. Now, it’s the new kid’s turn.
