A 1963 Fairlane hardtop suffered a serious blow to the right front, but everything else looks very good on it.

Good parts remain on this 1966 Ford convertible that is resting on the ground. The engine and transmission are still in the vehicle.

The engine and standard transmission have been removed from this 1965 Fairlane. It does have a slightly bent unusual trunk rack.

Jerry Shepherd has always been interested in vehicles. Immediately after high school, he enrolled in diesel mechanic school in Nashville, Tennessee.

At the end of that education 45 years ago, he founded his own business, Shepherd’s Auto Parts in Lancaster, Kentucky.

During the early years of the salvage yard business, Shepherd was also a professional drag racer during the late-’60s and into the ’70s. In 1978, at Ohio Valley Drag Strip, he set a National Hot Rod Association record with his 1968 small-block Camaro.

When his interest in drag racing cooled, Shepherd started restoring muscle cars and now restores and sells about 40 to 50 each year. Most of the restored cars are Fords, but he also restores other models. Shepherd showed us a beautiful red 1963½ Galaxie 500XL with a Z-Code 390 engine that had just gotten out of the restoration shop. It retains its nice original black vinyl roof and black upholstery.

Shepherd’s Auto Parts has a yard inventory of approximately 1,000 vehicles at any given time, ranging from 1955 to 2013 models. Many of the vehicles are purchased at insurance auctions throughout the United States. During our visit, Shepherd was online on two different auction sites bidding on several older vehicles, including a damaged Dodge Dart.

Most of the older vehicles in the yard are Ford Galaxies, Fairlanes, and Mustangs from the ’60s, but a few Chevys and Mopars have also found their way here. Unescorted browsing is allowed, but comes with a “look, but don’t touch” rule. If you see parts you want, they will be removed for you.
