Bill Strowbridge shares the story of this ZR-1:

“I’ve been custodian of the late Doug Johnson’s ’93 Automasters Black LT5 Street Skinner ZR-1 since November 2003. When I got it, BEAST2 had 154,000 miles on it; not on Jim Van Dorn’s Street Skinner package plus many extra modifications ... Van Dorn’s mods have about 70,00 miles on them.

“Jim Van Dorn coined the Black Widow name for eight ZR1s and has often referred to Doug’s as the unofficial ninth Black Widow because Doug’s LT5 was Krinkle-coated black by Mercruiser, where the original eight Black Widows were made. It now has about 166,000 miles on it.

“In the last three years, I have put less than 3,000 miles on it, mostly as displays at car shows and in parades. The last long trip on it was about 600 miles, with about 150 in city traffic; total trip averaged 24.8 mpg, which is what it usually got since Van Dorn shipped it to me!

“I only made one change to it since Van Dorn’s last rework of BEAST2 in September-November 2003, to make sure it met his standards before he shipped it to me. The last time I entered in a 300-plus car show, I took first in customized class. It’s detailed to perfection and gets a lot of interest and praises from show spectators ... several said BEAST2 looked newer than many of the much newer cars on display at the show.”
