Quality and rarity translate into big dollars when it comes to Corvettes, and this year’s Scottsdale auctions were no exception. Documented award-winners commanded top money, with L88s holding the top three spots.


1) 1967 L88 coupe (Lot 5035, Barrett-Jackson), $3,850,000

One of just 20 L88s made, this one is the only known red/red made, documented by GM and the National Corvette Restorers Society. It features the 427ci V-8 with aluminum heads, plus four-speed manual transmission. It has been honored with the NCRS Duntov Mark of Excellence Award and two NCRS Top Flight awards.


2) 1969 L88 #57 Rebel convertible race car (Lot 5022, Barrett-Jackson), $2,860,000

Ordered new by race car driver Or Costanzo, it was one of one four lightweight L88s built. It won the IMSA championship in 1971, and was raced in the 24 hours at Daytona in 1972; the car wears that paint scheme. Fully restored, it has been displayed at the National Corvette Museum and Bloomington Gold Special Collection, and competed in numerous vintage races.


3) 1968 L88 convertible (Lot 1318, Barrett-Jackson), $880,000

Purchased new in 1968 from Kline Chevrolet, it was kept by the original owner for 34 years. One of only 80 L88s made in 1968, it is an all-original, numbers-matching car, with a 427ci, 550hp V-8 coupled to a four-speed. Documentation included the original bill of sale, window sticker, Protect-O-Plate and tank sticker.


4) 1953 convertible (Lot 5038, Barrett-Jackson), $660,000

Purchased from the original owner’s estate in 1972 for $5,000 by the late Chip Miller, co-founder of Carlisle events, it is number 181 of the first year’s production of 300. The car still wears its original tires, top, interior, mechanicals and a majority of the original paint, and shows only 9,260 original miles. It is a multiple award winner as was sold as a pair along with a matching VIN 2003 50th Anniversary Corvette convertible, purchased new by Miller before he passed away (Lot 5039, which sold for $110,000).


5) 1971 LS6/ZR2 coupe (Lot 5018, Barrett-Jackson), $495,000

Originally delivered to Canada, the coupe was one of 12 built and features a 454ci, 425hp high performance V-8 with heavy-duty four-bolt mains, solid lifters, and aluminum heads, coupled to a Rock Crusher M22 four-speed manual transmission. The ZR2 was a one-year only production package Paint is the factory original Brands Hatch Green, and the car has been given a complete restoration.


6) 1953 convertible (Lot 5065, Barrett-Jackson), $275,000

Unrestored but well maintained, this car bears an early serial number, number 083. Listed in the C1 Registry and Corvette Action Center 1953 Corvette Chronicles, it has its factory 235ci, 150hp Blue Flame six-cylinder engine, and Polo White lacquer paint. Inspections reveal no signs of damage repair to either the frame or hand-laid fiberglass body. It was once part of country singer Alan Jackson’s collection.


7) 1963 coupe (Lot 92, RM Auctions), $236,500

Combine the one-year styling of the split window coupe with fuel injection, and you have a potent combination. Restored to NCRS Top Flight Award winning standards, it is has with Rochester Ramjet mechanical fuel injection (one of 2,610 from the factory), and features the 327ci, 360hp L84 overhead valve V-8 with four-speed manual transmission. It is painted Daytona Blue.


8) 1970 ZR1 (Lot 5009, Barrett-Jackson), $220,000

Featuring the potent LT1 small block (350ci, 370hp, 380 lbs-ft), this Monza Red coupe was one of 25 made in 1970. Originally sold in Canada by Belisle Automobiles Ltd. of Ottawa, Ontario, it has been completely restored, and also features the M22 Rock Crusher four-speed manual transmission and Holley four-barrel carb, soldi lfiter cam, and dual plan aluminum intake manifold.


9) 1959 coupe (Lot 7003, Barrett-Jackson), $211,200

This Tuxedo Black convertible features the RPO 684 heavy-duty big brake and suspension package, mated to the 283ci, 290hp fuel injected small-block V-8 with four-speed, one of 142 so equipped in 1959. Completely restored, it also has a heater and radio delete.


10) 1963 “Asteroid”  custom coupe (Lot 5024, Barrett-Jackson), $187,500

Delivered to Barris Kustoms in 1963 with only 10 miles on the odometer by original owner Bob Nordskog (a well-known boat racer at the time), the body was transformed with side pipes and a metallic paint job. The engine was built by Nordskog’s boat center, and the car’s custom interior was done by Don Ferrara. It won awards at the 1963 Long Beach Motorama and 1963 Mickey Thompson Auto Boat Speed Show. After several years in storage, it has been restored to its 1963 appearance.
