American muscle was well represented at the annual Mecum auction, held in late January in Kissimmee, Florida. In fact, it was a muscle car that topped all of the Corvettes and exotic European models that crossed the block.

1) 1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda, 426 CI, Four-Speed, Unrestored (Lot S143) – Sold for $560,000

Original and unrestored, this 1971 Hemi Cuda coupe is a well-documented California car equipped with the standard Shaker hood with hold-down pins, chrome rocker moldings, bright fender vent trim, a color-keyed grille and factory Flat Black “Hemi” billboards. An all matching numbers car showing a believed correct 33,000 original miles, this rare Cuda is documented with two factory broadcast sheets.

2) 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback, KK #1696, 429/375 HP, Four-Speed (Lot S141) – Sold for $240,000

This 1969 Boss 429 is Kar Kraft number 1696, one of very few still in existence that remains unrestored but for a single repaint in the original Candyapple Red. A popular and high-profile feature of the famed Floyd Garrett Muscle Car Museum in Sevierville, Tennessee for approximately 10 years, it still retains its original matching numbers 429/375 HP engine, BorgWarner four-speed close ratio manual transmission and 3.91 rear end with Traction-Lok differential. 3) 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda, 426/425 HP, Four-Speed (Lot S189) – Sold for $240,000

This great Hemi muscle icon was purchased new from Town Chrysler in Minneapolis, Minnesota in February of 1971 by a collector in Texas, where it has remained in a private collection and still retains its February 1971 title as part of its excellent documentation. The drivetrain is original to the car: the 426 CI Hemi engine rated at 425 HP, heavy duty A-833 Hemi-rated four-speed manual transmission (complete with the original Hurst Pistol Grip shifter) and A34 Super Track Pack Dana 60 Sure Grip differential with 4.10:1 gearing.

4) 1969 Chevrolet Yenko Camaro, 12,600 Original Miles (Lot S168) – Sold for $235,000

Super Car Workshop owner and respected Yenko judge and restorer Brian Henderson described it as “one of the best I have examined in recent years.” This 1969 Yenko Camaro was assembled the second week of February 1969 in the second run of Yenko production and finished in Hugger Orange with a Black vinyl roof, D80 spoiler, the very rare VE3 body color front bumper and standard Black interior. It carries a correctly dated replacement short block with and a warranty replacement four-speed transmission. It is listed in both the COPO and Yenko Registries.

5) 1969 Chevrolet Camaro L89 Coupe, JL8 4-Wheel Disc Brakes (Lot S139) – Sold for $200,000

The L89 aluminum head big block V-8 was a rare option on the 1969 Camaro. This car is one of 311 produced and believed to be the only one with its particular combination of options. It was rotisserie restored with correctly date coded and numbered NOS parts and components. Factory documentation includes the Protect-O-Plate, broadcast sheet, invoice sheet, window sticker, delivery checklist and owner's manual.

6) 1969 Chevrolet Yenko Camaro, 427/450 HP, Four-Speed (Lot F188) – Sold for $177,500

 The car features the Fathom Green body color with the black top and black interior. The original factory engine was replaced by Yenko with a period-correct COPO 9561 L72 mated to a four-speed transmission. It has been documented by the COPO connection and is listed in the Super Car Registry. It was one of 100 COPOs ordered by Yenko in November 1968 and one of 171 four-speeds for 1969.

7) 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 Lightweight, R-Code 427/425 HP, 1 of 25 Automatics Built (Lot F274) – Sold for $170,000

The full-size Galaxies were all business, riding on lightweight chassis, devoid of creature comforts and packing Ford’s R-code 427/425 HP High Riser engine with dual Holley four-barrel carburetors fed by forced air induction. Sold to Allen Besselievre, Jr. in San Diego, this 1964 Galaxie 500 Lightweight is one of 25 produced with the heavy duty automatic transmission and incorporates the fiberglass “tear-drop” hood and Firestone Lightning drag slicks. It was later part of the Dick Bridges Collection and was fully restored in the original combination of Wimbledon White with a Red interior.

8) 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda, 426/425 HP, Automatic, Broadcast Sheet (Lot F220) – Sold for $150,000

In 1970, the vaunted Street Hemi was added to the ‘Cuda’s production big-block engine lineup. Cared for by the same proud owner for 17 years, this rare 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda coupe was the subject of a correct rotisserie restoration by Ray Youkin of Florida. The R-code 426/425 HP Hemi engine bears the correct Carter AFB 4742S- and 4746S-code front and rear carburetors, and is mated to the rare heavy duty Hemi-spec Torqueflite A727 automatic transmission, also bearing the correct code. This fabulous Hemi Cuda is well documented with the original broadcast sheet, more than $100,000 in receipts and a CD with 101 photos chronicling its masterful restoration.

9) 1970 Pontiac Trans Am Ram Air IV, Original Drivetrain (Lot F232) – Sold for $147,500

Pontiac stylists and aerodynamicists took a typically much more aggressive approach with the Trans Am in 1970, including the dramatic “Screaming Chicken” hood decal as a graphic exclamation point. The 1970 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am’s new suspension and quicker steering also set a new standard of performance handling. This rare 1970 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is one of only 29 to leave the factory equipped with the muscular Ram Air IV 400/370 HP engine mated with a Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission.

10) 1969 Pontiac Trans Am, 400 CI, 4-Speed (Lot F198.1) – Sold for $125,000

Truly a lot to like about the earliest versions of the Trans Am. This model is equipped with the Ram Air III 400 engine and connected to a four-speed transmission. There were only 520 cars built this way in 1969. It has been carefully restored on a rotisserie to allow the car to remain a time capsule for Pontiac performance for years to come. Documentation from Pontiac Historical Society gives the buyer assurance.

11) 1971 Plymouth Hemi GTX (Lot S240) – Sold for $125,000

This rotisserie restored GTX is recognized as one of the top 25 Hemis still around in the United States. It was 1 of 19 original Hemi cars and features original sheet metal, 426 Hemi built by Indy Cylinder Head, an automatic transmission and numerous NOS parts and pieces. The interior is eye-opening as well with period options, including an AM/FM cassette and Rim Blow steering wheel.

12) 1969 Pontiac Trans Am Coupe, One Owner Car (Lot F219) – Sold for $125,000

One of only 697 built, this 1969 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am spent its entire life in California and Arizona and is rust free with only 13,216 miles on the odometer. It has always been maintained by the same mechanic, a fact that helps explain how the car has survived these 45 years with its original components. It is one of the most original and correct Trans Ams in existence. Receipts for all the work, which total more than $15,000, are included with the car. Rare, highly original, correct and fully documented, this is everything the avid Trans Am collector is looking for.
