Can you say “Hemi”? Adding that phrase also meant digging deep into your wallet at the recent Arizona auctions, as eight of the 10 cars on this list carried that potent powerplant.


1) 1954 Plymouth Belmont concept car (Lot 5066, Barrett-Jackson), $1,320,000

Designed under the direction of Virgil Exner for the 1954 Chicago Auto Show and New York Autorama, this concept car rode on a 114-inch wheelbase, powered by a 3.9L V-8 hooked to a Hy-drive transmission. The aerodynamic body is made of fiberglass. Well received by the public, it was never put into production, making this the only one built.


2) 1970 Plymouth Hemi Superbird (Lot 5029, Barrett-Jackson), $550,000

With its original 426ci, 425hp Hemi engine with dual four-barrel carbs and TorqueFlite transmission, this numbers-matching example has been restored in the original Alpine White paint. Authenticated by Mopar authority Galen Govier, it is number 28 of 78 in Govier’s Hemi Superbird Registry.


3) 1971 Dodge Hemi Challenger (Lot S752, Russo & Steele), $316,930

Built at the Long Beach, California, plant, and finished in triple black, it spent the first 30 years in the Golden State. It is one of 58 Hemi Challengers for 1971, and has not been restored. It has its original interior, vinyl top, engine and four-speed transmission. Documentation includes two build sheets and three original fender tags.


4) 2013 Dodge Viper GTS (Lot F535, Russo & Steele), $236,630

A one-of-a-kind supercar designed and built especially for the Sons of Italy Foundation, proceeds from the sale benefitted the foundation’s educational and charitable programs. Finished in tri-coat Pearl White (“Avorio Perla” in Italian) with a leather interior, it is powered by a 640hp 8.4L V-10 mated to a six-speed manual transmission. It rides on custom multi-spoke wheels.


5) 1970 Plymouth Hemi ’Cuda (Lot 1335, Barrett-Jackson), $220,000

Lime Green with a black interior, this car packs the 426ci, 425 Hemi V-8 with dual carbs under its shaker hood, and the TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmission. Other features include an overhead console, rally instruments, fog lamps, 15-inch rally wheels with Polyglas tires and hood pins. It has been documented as the only one with this combination, as evidenced by build sheets, fender tags, and a 21-page report by Mopar expert Galen Govier.


6) 1969 Dodge Charger 500 with Hemi (Lot S760, Russo & Steele), $220,000

Made by dodge to meet NASCAR rules, the Charger 500 was the first vehicle in what would be dubbed the “Aero Wars” of 1969 and 1970. A more aerodynamic version of the Charger R/T, the 500 had a flush mounted grille and headlights and smoother rear window. This black example has just 12,000 original miles, the dual-quad-topped 426 Hemi, A-833 four speed manual transmission.


7) 1968 Plymouth Barracuda [Ronnie Sox race car] (Lot 5017, Barrett-Jackson), $198,000

Owned and driven by Ronnie sox, the car is one of approximately 50 lightweight race cars assembled by Hurst Performance. Ordered new from Midtown Plymouth in Dayton, Ohio, by Bill Vanwey, it was raced by Vanwey until the 1969 season, and was eventually acquired by Ronnie Sox. Full documentation and racing history accompany the car, which has been displayed at the NHRA Museum and Mr. Norm’s Garage.


8) 1969 Dodge Charger 500 with Hemi (Lot 1291, Barrett-Jackson), $181,500

Showing just 1,295 original miles, this Charger 500 spent its life as a drag racer in California, when the original owner retired it after replacing the original engine with a race engine for its first 400 miles. After sitting in storage for nearly 30 years, the original 426 Hemi was reinstalled, making the car again numbers matching. The car was restored in 1998, including its Dark Green Metallic paint, and also has a three-speed automatic, plus an extensive list of options.


9) 1970 Plymouth Hemi ’Cuda (Lot 31, Gooding & Company), $170,000

Sporting Rallye Red paint with a black top and black interior, this unrestored, original condition example has had only thee owners since new, all from California. Highly optioned, it has the 426 Hemi coupled to a four-speed manual, making it one of only 284 thus equipped in 1970. Extensive documentation, service records, and factory literature were included.


10) 1968 Dodge Coronet R/T Hemi convertible (Lot 5028, Barrett-Jackson), $154,000

Given a complete restoration, this ragtop was one of only nine ever made, and has Dark Blue Metallic paint with matching blue bucket seats and a black top. Underhood is the 426 Hemi mated to a three-speed TorqueFlite automatic. Finishing it off are 15-inch wheels with redline tires and dog dish hubcaps. Certified by Mopar expert Galen Govier.
