Muscle Cars Lead the Way

It was a busy week, but that’s the usual scene when the Mecum Auctions rolls into Indianapolis fpor the annual Dana Mecum’s Original Spring Classic. The event, held this year on May 13-18, marked the 27th visit to the event, held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
Nearly 2,000 cars were offered for sale with a substantial number of muscle cars represented. Many of those muscle cars came right to the top of the standings in the sold categories with a few more retreating to their current homes when reserves were not met. A number of the successful bidders required six-figure investments in order to get the car of their desires.
Topping the American muscle side of things was a 1968 Yenko Camaro (Lot S152) that sold for $320,000. The car was one of 64 Camaros modified by Don Yenko in 1968 and this powerhouse is documented as one of the first group of 20 cars. These first 20 cars were built without the COPO 9737 designation that included heavier-duty cooling systems, suspension and brake upgrades. It accumulated most of its 1,304 miles a quarter mile at a time, making it one of the lowest-mileage Yenko Camaros in existence.
The Mopar crowd saw a 1969 Dodge Hemi Charger 500 ring in as the fourth best seller. Lot S135 sold at $270,000, edging out the 1968 Shelby GT500KR convertible that led all Fords with a $267,500 bid. Muscle cars occupied the next four spots with a 1971 Hemi Cuda ($260,000), 1970 Boss 429 Mustang ($255,000), 1969 Boss 429 ($237, 500) and 1970 Chevelle LS6 ($235,000)
Tops in the “Bid Goes On” class is a 1963 “Swiss Cheese” Catalina, perhaps the most famous of the 14 that were built before GM’s racing ban. Sponsored by Packer Pontiac of Detroit, it was driven in 1963 by Packer employee Howard Maselles, who set the NHRA C/Stock class record with a 12.27 ET at 114.64 mph, a record that stood for several years. The car was bid to $525,000.
